Good work to the 83 MPs* who said 'no' to the Lords' ridiculous ID cards 'compromise', which involves no compromise at all on the part of the ID proponents. They were always more interested in the compulsory database than the compulsory card, and the compulsory database they will still have, with the card following shortly behind. (I note that [info]strictlytrue favourites Philip Hollobone and Peter Bone are split on this issue. Is there a breach in the North Northamptonshire alliance?)

In the meantime, if parliament won't stop ID cards, then the people will have to do it.

Power to the people!

*Plus North West Leicestershire's David Taylor, who not for the first time voted both yes and no. His heart is in the right place.

UPDATE: Since everyone in the world seems to like Peter Tatchell these days, here's Peter Tatchell:

"ID cards are a grotesque waste of public money. The £19 billion should be spent on improving schools and hospitals."

With you all the way! (but you already knew that)

Philip Hollobone and Peter Bone

What is it with Northamptonshire and right-wing Bone-heads anyway?

David Taylor, who not for the first time voted both yes and no.

I too have noticed this peculiar trait from Mr. Taylor; why does he do this rather than abstain?

His heart is in the right place

What, Coalville?

What, Coalville?

Ashby-de-la-Zouch, obviously.

(When did he join the Campaign Group? Has he always been a member?)

Been there ever since he got elected, AFAIK. One of the better MPs around.

That's interesting. I only started paying attention to him last year, when he blamed the slashing of his majority on Blair.

Definitely getting more rebellious as he goes along, though.

If only I lived 100 yards down the road, my MP would be Lynne Jones, and I'd never have to bother writing letters to my MP about anything. (In case you weren't already aware, my actual MP is Roger 'useless and lazy' Godsiff, who doesn't bother replying to my letters).

Godsiff has always been a waste of space, ever since he was parachuted into Brum from Lewisham council in 1992 after much dodgy dealings involving GMB bloc votes.

I know, it must have some sort of funny effect on... oh, oh wait a minute.

To keep his Fantasy MP Theyworkforyou statistics up.

To keep his Fantasy MP Theyworkforyou statistics up.

There was a piece in the Northants Evening Telegraph (which I read daily) saying that both Hollobone and Bone had dedicated their nascent parliamentary careers to this.

There was a piece in the same paper saying Bone actually was a member of a Sven-Goran Eriksson lookalikes association.

The Northampton Chronicle and Echo is a better, though fundamentally identical, paper. ET will get you more Bone-on-Bone action though, I agree.

I read that too, I'm afraid. I get paid to, which softens the blow.

I'd say that was a small but not very elite club. Peter Bone, Sven-Goran Eriksson, Mr. Burns off The Simpsons and who else?

He left when he became an MP, too, so perhaps the association is now disbanded.

I'd be happy to do that whenever you're not busy shoving leaflets through doors!
